Yes, you can find pens with a magnet embedded into or attached to the pen, but when the pen runs out, you have to buy another one. On the other hand, my great little cube will hold virtually all writing utensils less than 3/8" in diameter. You've got a pen or pencil right where you need one, and the holder can be used again and again.
